Do I need a student visa?

If you are an overseas student planning to study at university in the UK, then you will need to apply for a student visa before arriving.

How do I apply for a student visa?

You can apply online on the UK Government website here, however it’s important that you read all of the information, steps on how to apply, and what documents you will need before starting your application.

What do I need before starting my application?

Before you can complete your visa application, there are a few things you need to make sure you have:

  • an unconditional offer of a place on a course from a licenced student sponsor (university or college). If your place of study is a licenced student sponsor, they will be able to send you your reference number (also known as CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies)) which you will need to add to your visa application
  • proof of English language skills. Your university or college will let you know if you need to pass an exam by an approved provider
  • A valid passport or travel documents.

These are the essentials you’ll need before making your application. Other information and documentation you may be asked for include:

  • Proof your parent(s) or guardian(s) consent to you studying in the UK (only required if you are under 18 years of age)
  • Certificates of education
  • Proof of finances and that you have enough money to support yourself and pay for your university course.

How long does it take for a decision to be made?

The official UK Government website states that you will receive a decision with three weeks, however this may be longer or shorter depending on when you submit your application and if further documentation and information is required.

When should I apply for a student visa?

If you have all the required documentation then we suggest applying as soon as possible, so if there are any delays in receiving your visa, you have plenty of time to enquire ahead of your check in date. UCAS suggests applying before August, as this is the busiest time for student visa applications and you may not receive a decision in time.

I wasn’t issued with a visa so I can’t travel or study – can I cancel my booking?

Yes, if you don’t receive a visa to take up your place at university, or to undertake a pre-sessional English Language course, then you are eligible to cancel your booking under our Cancellation Policy
