Packed full of past and present wonders, Warwick is not your average market town. Whether it’s your first year living at the University of Warwick, or you're returning for another year of making memories, our guide to the best things to see and do as a University of Warwick student is here to help.
Take a look below for some recommendations that will open your eyes to the wonders of Warwick.
One for the historians, Warwick Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 1068. This medieval castle on the River Avon is rich in history. It’s now host to all sorts of special events throughout the year, like the ‘Wars of the Roses Live’ jousting experience. Did you know? Students can also explore the lavish interiors of Warwick Castle, have a go at archery and more, all at a discounted rate: just verify your student status to start making the most of having a castle on your doorstep.
If a 1,100 year old castle isn’t enough to satisfy your interest in the past, Warwick has plenty more historical wonders on offer. The Collegiate Church of St Mary is a landmark in this ancient town and its layout showcases a range of architectural styles. Did you know that the tower was destroyed in the great fire of Warwick in 1694? Nope, we didn’t either! Best part? It’s free to visit, although group guided tours can be booked for a small fee.
Get yourself down to Warwick’s Charter market. Located in the town centre, this traditional open air market takes place on a Saturday. Shop everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to clothing and gifts at the many stalls - there’s definitely something for everyone! Shopping locally is also a great way to keep the costs down as a University of Warwick student, so why not pop to the market and have a browse?
Shopping is thirsty work, but thankfully you’re never far from one of Warwick’s independent cafes. Quench your thirst with a coffee at Jack’s Shack on Jury Street. This coffee shop also does a variety of velvety milkshakes and tasty treats that you can enjoy surrounded by surfer themed décor. Why travel anywhere else when you have holiday vibes just down the road in Warwick?
St Nicholas’ Park, or “St Nick’s”, is one of the many gardens and parks that you can find in Warwick. The perfect setting for picnics or catching up on your uni reading, the park is situated in the heart of Warwick and also has a tea shop, 18 hole mini-golf course and boating centre. Or would you rather get some aesthetic pictures for the gram? If so, the Mill Garden with its pretty flowers, winding paths and a dramatic backdrop of Caesar’s tower is the place to go.
All this (and more!) is within a short distance of The Oaks, the perfect Warwick student accommodation for all stages of your university journey. Choose between en-suite and studio student accommodation that is right by campus, plus enjoy access to a gym, games area, rooftop terrace and other amazing communal spaces! It’s more than a room - it’s the perfect environment for all of your student needs.
