Can you get accommodation through clearing?

Yes! Although options for last minute student accommodation during clearing can be limited, don’t fret if you’re applying late for student accommodation!

How do I apply for accommodation in clearing?

All students are guaranteed accommodation through clearing, however, the options available to you at your university may be limited. Most universities will have an online portal to apply for student accommodation, or by speaking to your university's accommodation office, they will be able to point you in the direction of privately owned student accommodation (like Student Roost) or letting agents.

What does university clearing mean?

Clearing is a set period of time, usually between July and October, where all universities post the remaining places on their undergraduate courses online. It’s an opportunity for those who may have changed their mind about continuing their education, the course they want to study or for those who haven’t met the conditions of their offers. Do all universities offer clearing?

Not all universities, Oxford, Cambridge and some Russell Group institutions to name a few, take part in clearing. The same goes for really popular courses like midwifery, veterinary science and medicine.

What are the dates for clearing?

Accepted Answer

The dates for clearing change from year to year, but this year the clearing process opened on 5th July 2024, to give those who are yet to secure any offers, like those who missed the UCAS deadline, the chance to go to university. You can still apply through clearing up until 25th September 2024 (18:00) GMT and the deadline to finalise your choice, when clearing is due to close, is October 21st 2024.

Question 6

Will I get my first rent payment refunded if I can no longer go to my first-choice uni?

Accepted Answer

Yep! If you can no longer go to your chosen university, our Cancellation Policy covers a range of changes in circumstance. Whether you didn’t get the grades you expected, had your course start date deferred until next year, or have had to switch to study in a city where we don’t offer accommodation, don’t worry; we’ve got you.

If sufficient evidence is provided to our satisfaction, you will be eligible for release from your tenancy agreement from the date of our approval of your cancellation request. Question 7

Will I get my deposit refunded, too?

Accepted Answer

Good news: if you need to cancel your booking due to a change in circumstance, your deposit will be refunded in full. Given you won’t have moved in before results day, we can skip the usual room inspection phase of the deposit refund process.

Question 8

If I can no longer attend, do I need to provide any information or evidence to cancel my booking?

Accepted Answer

If you can no longer study at your initial chosen university for one of the reasons stated above or outlined in our cancellation policy, please get in touch with your Property Team.

To speed up the process, please enclose official written evidence from the relevant university and/or Summer School and/or UCAS and/or visa authorities/embassy supporting the reason(s) why you cannot attend the university in question. Once we’ve received satisfactory evidence and your cancellation has been approved, you’ll be released from your tenancy contract and we’ll arrange for your refund to be processed.

Question 9

How long will it take for my refund to be processed?

Accepted Answer

The first payment for the 24/25 academic year is 1st August if you’ve booked to live in one of our England, Wales or Northern Ireland properties; if you’ve booked to live in one of our Scotland Roosts, payment will be due on the first date of your tenancy contract. Similarly, if you book after 1st August to live in an England, Wales or Northern Ireland property, the first payment will be due on the first date of your contract.

If you need a refund after results day, it will be automatically refunded back onto the same card that was used to make the original payment. You will receive email confirmation that your refund has been processed. For cards linked to UK accounts, you should receive your refund within 3-5 days; international cards do take a little longer, approximately 7-10 days.

If you paid your first payment via bank transfer (BACS), you will need to complete a refund form, which we will send to you. You can choose which bank account you would like the refund paid to, including the same account that you used to make the original payment. Please make sure that the details entered on the refund form are correct and up to date. Incorrect information may delay your refund being completed. As for deposits, it may take a little while for this refund to be completed. This is because deposits must be held within the relevant Protection Scheme for at least 30 days before they can be released, due to anti-money laundering regulations. Once the deposit has been held for at least 30 days, you can expect to be refunded within 5 days of both parties (us and you!) accepting the deposit release from the Protection Scheme. Question 10

I’ve changed uni to another city with Student Roost accommodation. Can my deposit and first rent instalment/tenancy be transferred to another property?

Accepted Answer

If, after results day, you find yourself in a position where you’re going to be studying in a different city that has Student Roost accommodation with available rooms, then yes! We can transfer your booking to the new property.

Please note that a new tenancy agreement will have to be entered into, and the room type and rent price for the new Student Roost accommodation may be different from your previous booking. For example, the rent amount for the new Student Roost accommodation in the different city may be higher or, depending on availability, you may be placed in a different room type.
