Discover Belfast student living

Let’s take a look at what Belfast has to offer to its student population. We’ve broken down our guide into some key areas like nightlife, music, food and more to help you find what really speaks to you. Shall we start with a little history?

Belfast landmarks

Belfast is steeped in history and culture, so much so that a short walk around the city will mean you’re likely to encounter some impressive landmarks without even trying. Any Belfast sight-seeing checklist will probably start with Titanic Belfast, a monument to the story of RMS Titanic and Belfast’s maritime heritage, situated on the iconic former Harland and Wolff shipyard – the very place where the ill-fated ship was built. It’s a must for history buffs (or anyone who fell in love with Jack and Rose in the film).

Elsewhere, you can explore the fascinating Crumlin Road Gaol jailhouse, stroll the picturesque Botanic Gardens or step into the stunning Belfast Cathedral, at the heart of the city’s famous Cathedral Quarter. Game of Thrones buff? You won’t have to travel far to see scenery from your favourite show. Don’t forget to check out the city’s Peace Walls which act as a powerful reminder of the city’s complex history, adorned with striking art and messages. Which brings us on to our next stop of the tour…

Belfast street art

Much like stumbling onto a slice of history, you’re likely to cast your eyes upon at least one piece of striking street art on a short jaunt around Belfast. The history’s rich artistic heritage is showcased on its streets, with buildings acting as canvas for talented local artists and a medium for some powerful murals and messages.

Sign up for a guided street art tour or simply have a wander with friends and discover some stunning pieces. Either way, you’re sure to come away feeling inspired and glad you chose such a visually arresting place to live! Talbot Street and Kent Street are two of our favourite stretches, so keep your eyes out. Look out for our guide to Belfast street art, coming soon!

Belfast foodie scene

If you think the jewel in any city’s cultural crown is its culinary landscape, you’re in luck: Belfast has got the goods – and they’re tasty. Start with homely fair in one of the city’s many traditional Irish pubs: we’re talking hearty stews, pies, and fish and chips. Looking for lunch on the go or post-lecture drink and dining with your uni buds? Go for a Hero sub, roast chicken and fries at Yardbird, or check out what vendors are dishing up eats at the likes of Trade Market and Common Market.

If it’s an end-of-exams or graduation celebration, try fine dining on a budget at the likes of Six by Nico or one of the city’s familiar chains. And if you’re looking to cook up a feast for your flatmates or centre your weekend around food, don’t miss St. George’s Market where you can tickle your tastebuds with samples and pick up some local ingredients and artisanal products. Anyone else hungry??

Belfast music

Music is the thrumming heartbeat of Belfast. Going for a quiet one at a new local like The Sunflower or Kelly’s Cellars? Don’t be surprised if that group of mates in the corner who were enjoying a quiet drink suddenly whip out all manner of instruments and start treating your ears to some traditional Irish folk.

As well as the grassroots gig scene and open mics in cozy pubs, like any major city Belfast welcomes bigger bands and artists to its larger stages – so keep an eye on local listings, so you don’t miss your new favourite or the superstar DJ who’s been soundtracking your flat’s getting-ready-for-a-night-out routine.

Belfast nightlife

Did someone say DJ? If you’re looking to let off steam after a particularly brain-busting week of lectures and study, then you’re in the right place. Belfast’s nightlife is as lively as it is eclectic. From the aforementioned traditional pubs for something more laidback, to buzzier bars and cracking club nights, the choice is yours.

If you’re looking to make a night of it, head to the Cathedral Quarter or Golden Mile which offer a good choice of bars and clubs in close proximity. Looking for LGBTQ+ venues? Check out Union Street and Donegall Street for inclusive bars and dancefloors. And let’s not forget Great Patrick Street’s very own disco kitchen… Just sayin’!

Belfast universities

Thinking about studying in Belfast? You may be set on Queen’s University Belfast or Ulster University – or perhaps you’ve applied to both. Both are excellent institutions for students, offering wide-ranging courses and top-class facilities. Ulster Uni is more central to the city, but the slightly more southern Queen’s is still easily reachable by public transport or a short walk.

Both universities are intrinsic to the city, with students from either choosing to make Belfast city centre their home. Whichever uni you’re considering, you will be glad to hear that Student Roost in Belfast has an option for you. John Bell House and Swanston House are situated closer to Queen’s University Belfast (but still just over a 10-minute walk to Ulster University), while Great Patrick Street and Little Patrick Street are just a short 5-minute walk to Ulster’s city centre campus. Our most recent addition to the skyline is Nelson Place, a striking student accommodation featuring en-suite and studio living, plus unique features like an 11th-storey sky lounge (oooh, the views!) and Ulster University’s onsite sport centre which is housed within the building.

So, there you have it. With something for everyone, get ready to embrace all aspects of student life and make the most of your exciting new adventure in Belfast.
