The sheer size of London means that there’s a whole lot to explore. London can be divided, albeit crudely, into five areas: West, East, North, South, and the City. Within each area there are plenty of smaller ones, each with a distinct look and feel. Some will be known to everyone like Westminster, Piccadilly, and Camden while less well-known ones like Peckham, Hackney Wick, and Stoke Newington should also get your consideration. You’ll never see it all in one go, so pick an area you’d like to explore and embrace the tourist spirit to get a real taste of the city, before heading back to the comfort of your student accommodation in London.
Speaking of tastes, wherever in the country or world you’re from, you’ll be able to find a flavour of home in London. Fretting about the cost? Don’t be – there are plenty of budget eateries, even in expensive neighbourhoods, and food markets offering delicious dishes for a few pounds. Get a taste of the Caribbean in Brixton, a hit of umami in Chinatown or try a little bit of everything at the famous Borough Market.
London is undeniably a city of culture. There are over 250 art institutions in London, spanning from classic to contemporary and experimental. The best thing about this? Most are completely free to attend. Make a beeline for the National Gallery to see some of the most iconic paintings up close, the Tate Modern and Tate Britain for eye-opening collections, and the Natural History Museum to see all manner of prehistoric critters.
The best thing about London for students, locals, and visitors alike is the variety of everything on offer. No day has to be the same if you don’t want it to. There are countless events, landmarks and activities to enjoy – the toughest part is making up your mind.
