Student Roost resident Elena chose to live at The Boulevard after getting into the University of York through clearing.
We spoke to Elena about her experience living at The Boulevard, including advice for first year students and her favourite memories.
Name: Elena
University: University of York
Roost: The Boulevard
I was really picky about where I wanted to live. And I thought The Boulevard was nice. I didn't have an on-campus space [through clearing], so I had to go private. And I got an offer from [The Boulevard]. I think someone had cancelled a room. And then I liked it so much, I have stayed for 3 years.
First year, I lived in one of the cluster flats. I liked having my own en-suite but I was weird about sharing a kitchen. Now I live by myself in a studio and next year I'm living by myself in the studio again. I just rebooked the same room. And I much prefer that because I like my own space.
I remember [in my] first year, we were watching one of the Euros matches. And everyone went so all out. The [property] team got everyone an England hat, and everyone was cheering. [The events] are really fun. I helped organise the therapy dog one.
There's just something that feels a bit homey about this place. It might look expensive but [it's not] when you think about all the bills included.
I think there's an added level of security with the gates. You know, with all the key cards and stuff like I've never felt unsafe living here. Having someone here 24/7 has been a nice addition because I know my friends who live on campus. They've got campus security, but they haven't got people in their accommodation. Whereas for me, [it's getting] the lift down and someone's there.
Literally 5 minutes it takes me to walk to uni from my front door. Also, the walk into town [is a] nice straight main road. I am a manager at a restaurant in town and when I am closing it is a safe, well-lit walk home.
I was supposed to live in a house [with my flatmates] this year. And I used to sit in reception and cry about it almost every day and then that's when they like jumped me up the queue for [a] studio. They were really good to me about that. And that's why I still live here now and the reason I'm just gonna stay here next year.
I've always felt like I'm an actual adult living here. I’ve got my independence. I feel like in first year, it’s so daunting, like actually having to go out and do all that stuff, but the team are here to help you.
