Third-year student Sarah sat down with us at The Railyard to share her experience living in one of our Liverpool student accommodations.
We spoke to Sarah about her two years living with Student Roost at The Railyard and shared some memorable experiences and top tips for fellow students.
Here’s what he had to say…
Sarah's student story
Name: Sarah
University: University of Liverpool
Studying: English Literature
Roost: The Railyard
Why did you choose to live with Student Roost?
I chose the Railyard for my second year because it’s really close to my side of campus. It’s literally ten minutes away from where all my lectures are, the library that I use, and it’s close to the shops as well. The price is really reasonable as well.
As soon as I moved in, the reception staff were lovely. They were just so, and that was the first thing I noticed. I feel like they understand that you are a student within a city that isn’t your own, and it’s just nice to have someone showing a little bit of compassion for that.
What has your social experience been like living with us?
One of the girls in my flat this year, I lived with last year as well. I didn’t know her before and met her at the Railyard. I would’ve never met her in uni because we are on completely opposite sides of the campus, but after living with her last year, we decided to live together again this year because we both liked it so much.
Also, the other flatmates that I was living with last year, I’m still friends with now, and I bump into them all the time. Sometimes you even meet people in the laundry room, it’s not just the social events.
Did you consider moving into a student house in your first or second year?
It wasn’t something that I wanted to do, really. I’ve heard stories about it ending really badly and not turning out well. With student accommodation, you’ve got members of staff that you can turn to, which you wouldn’t have in a house. I think that having 24-hour security, having the members of staff constantly there, takes away the stress and the responsibility of if something goes wrong.
Especially since I’m in my third year now, I’m thinking about masters and I have three jobs, it’s a lot to think about. It helps that I don’t have to think about issues with flats, and I know that I can always go to reception and they will help me sort it out.
Can you recall a time when you’ve had a personal challenge or issue while you've been living here? What was that experience like?
When I was doing the swap over from second year to third at Railyard, I was really anxious about who my flatmates were going to be and that we wouldn’t get on. J went to the reception, and I spoke to them about this. They were really understanding about it. We spent a while chatting about it, and they really reassured me.
Do you have a favourite thing about living with Student Roost?
Definitely the reception team. They’re so lovely and organised. Also, the events are great. Last year, they did therapy dogs at the neighbouring property, Myrtle Court, which we’re allowed to go to, they do movie nights and even Freebie Friday. It’s just so nice, I think it takes away from the shock of moving to a different city and feeling alone. It’s almost like having a mini family.
Do you have any advice for someone who is unsure if they’d like to rebook for next year?
I think that it’s appealing not to have to deal with bills for the whole of your degree. There are so many things, like council tax, to think about. It’s a massive appeal to me. It’s a massive advantage of student accommodation because obviously, bills are included, so it means that I can shower for as long as I want, I can have the heating on all year round if I want.
Student accommodation is much easier, you don’t have stairs or a living room to clean, and you don’t need to divide up who’s going to clean what room. In accommodation, everyone just cleans their own room, and we’ve all got our own bathroom. It’s really only the kitchen that needs a cleaning rota, it’s just so much simpler living in Student Roost.
