Third-year student Ehsaan sat down with us at The Railyard to share his experience living in two of our Liverpool student accommodations.
We spoke to Ehsaan about his two years living with Student Roost, beginning at Myrtle Court before moving to the neighbouring property, The Railyard, and shared some standout moments.
Here’s what he had to say…
Ehsaan’s student story
Name: Ehsaan
University: University of Liverpool
Studying: Computer science
Roost: The Railyard
Why did you choose to live with Student Roost?
I chose Myrtle because it seemed good in terms of proximity to the university, plus there was a supermarket nearby. It was a nice-looking place as well.
I had built up such a trusting relationship with the team there that I decided to rebook at Railyard for the next year, as the team is the same. I already knew the area because they’re very close to each other, and I already knew where everything was. There was nothing to be scared of.
What has your social experience been like living with us?
When I was in my first year, they’d come up to me and say, “Are you from Myrtle?” and then we’d form a friendship. I still speak to a lot of them. My flatmates this year and last year were great as well. Also, Myrtle has a games room and a living room area which we’re allowed to use.
Did you consider moving into a student house in your first or second year?
It was something I considered, but once I thought about it, I realised that this way, there’s no arguing over what room you get. There are no arguments between flatmates because every room is uniform. It’s a lot less stressful. I also like the parcel system, there’s always someone at reception, they’ll always get your parcels, and maintenance is always on site as well.
The bills thing is quite significant too, when you look at houses and the cost of those, the pricing here seems better. This place is also really close to the university, whereas if you have a house, you may have to walk an extra 5-10 minutes every day. This way is super convenient.
I wouldn’t want to think about having to manage stuff, I wouldn’t want to think about having to pay for broadband or trying to split it between your flatmates and then all the other bills too. It just sounds like a nuisance to deal with. It’s a burden that I haven’t had to experience here, so that’s great.
Can you recall a time when you’ve had a personal challenge or issue while you've been living here? What was that experience like?
Once, I must’ve walked out of the flat and left my key in my room and once, I’d told the team they were here within two minutes. You can’t really replace that convenience.
In my first year here, I struggled a bit with my flatmates, but the team here were so helpful. They offered me great advice and did whatever they could to support me. I also know a lot of students in my site who also speak to the staff a lot.
Do you have a favourite thing about living with Student Roost?
I’d say the staff here are great, I’m on first name basis with them and I speak to them a lot. They’re the best part of living here, they genuinely care about you, and it shows in the little actions they take. They love it here. Sometimes I just speak to them for ten minutes and genuinely feel the conversation, they are the nicest people on earth. I cannot express my gratitude for them enough. I honestly couldn’t think of a better place to live than here.
You can change so many things about a place, but the staff are irreplaceable. They just hit the mark. They really are the determining factor for me when it comes to living here.
Can you think of any perks of living at Student Roost?
I honestly just don’t have to worry about my finances when I’ve got my exams, and that really does matter. During exam season, I tend to spend more. I think most people spend more when they’re stressed. It allows me to do things for myself, like go and get food without it adding up really fast. It’s really nice that I don’t have to think about paying for more things on top of the treats.
They also have this thing called Freebie Friday, where they give out some free stuff, and I absolutely love it. It’s random, but it shows how much they care about their residence.
