Liverpool student Daniela on life at two Roosts
Second-year student Daniela sat down with us at The Railyard, to tell all about her experience living in our Liverpool student accommodation.
We spoke to Daniela about her two years living with Student Roost, beginning at Myrtle Court before moving to neighbouring property The Railyard, including some top tips for freshers and some standout memories.
Here’s what she had to say…
Daniela’s student story
Name: Daniela
University: University of Liverpool
Studying: Law & Philosophy
Roost: The Railyard
Why did you choose to live with Student Roost?
So, when it came to actually choosing Myrtle Court, I was looking at the pictures of the rooms. The main thing for me is the rooms are much nicer – that's what drew me to it in the first place.
What has your social experience been like living with us?
Last year, I didn't have any friends at all coming into uni, no one from my school went to the same university. So, when I moved into Myrtle Court, I spent a bit of time downstairs, like in the movie room and stuff, talked to my flatmates, made a few friends that way, and friends from other flats too.
Did you consider moving into a student house in first or second year?
I got on with my flatmates last year, but they wanted a house. It was sort of different priorities really. They wanted a house more in Kensington. I wanted to stay close to campus., also have longer terms.[LM1]
Me and the six friends I live with now, when we were initially looking for somewhere to stay, we knew we didn't want to deal with landlords, and we wanted everything to be included. We knew that second year is when it gets kind of hard academically. So, we wanted as little hassle as possible.
They'd all come to my flat last year at Myrtle Court, and they really liked it. They thought I had the biggest room out of everybody, the best storage and stuff. So then we looked at The Railyard.
What’s your best memory of your experience so far?
Last year, my flatmates and I used to sort of accidentally end up having dinner together all the time, like an accidental family dinner sort of thing. That was definitely my best memory, because it was people from all over [LM2] that I would never really have met otherwise. I think the flat had a really nice camaraderie.
The dining table is large… [and] there’s a couch area, so the environment really helped. In other flats, when someone's in the kitchen, you have to turn around and leave.
Can you recall a time where you’ve had a personal challenge or issue while you've been living here? What was that experience like?
A relative abroad was unwell and I had to leave the country pretty quickly. They [the team] were really supportive of that. So they helped me sort of pack up my room, let me know that they'll be there for me. I think they even emailed me once to make sure I was doing all right while I was abroad. It was just when you needed them, they were there.
Do you have a favourite thing about living with Student Roost?
Probably all the little events, like freebie Fridays, Valentine's, St Patrick's Day… there was a Diwali event last year, all those events where you can come with your friends or your flatmates or just come alone. I think they were really something to look forward to. My friends would literally ask me when the next event is and stuff, even though they didn't live there. I just love coming to them.
Also it’s spacious, everything’s clean, everything’s well maintained – you can't really ask for much more. I think cleanliness is the number one for me. We’re all on really good terms with the maintenance guy. And just having that sort of downstairs area is really nice: they hold on to our parcels, and we come back from nights out and talk to the receptionist.
Do you have any advice for someone who is unsure if they’d like to rebook for next year?
I'd say, don't add to your workload by dealing with stuff like landlords and houses and rats and silver fish. I'd say stay where you're comfortable, where you know you'll be looked after. Just knowing that everything's all in one place and sorted out is really helpful.
