What to bring from overseas

We want every resident to feel at home with us, and bringing personal items to decorate your room with is one of the ways you can make your student house feel like home.

We understand that if you’re joining us from abroad, there will be limitations on what items you can travel with. To help you reduce your luggage load, we’ve put together a list of the main essentials to bring with you when you check in.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Bedding, including a duvet, duvet cover, and pillowcases. You will be provided with a mattress cover. Many of our international residents order these in advance to be delivered to the property, so when you arrive, everything will be waiting for you in your room! Alternatively, some of our properties offer bedding packs to be purchased, so it’s worth asking your property team directly if this is something they provide.

  • Electronics such as laptops and phone chargers. All electrical items must be approved for use in the UK and have a UK plug socket. You are unable to bring items such as rice cookers, deep fat fryers and portable washing machines. For more information on what items aren’t allowed in our properties, visit our Wellbeing hub.

  • Decorative items such as photos in frames, artificial potted plants and plug in light boxes. Due to potential damage to walls, we ask residents not to stick posters or photos on their bedroom walls.

  • Clothing and footwear. Every room at all Student Roost properties have a wardrobe and drawers for you to store your clothes, and some properties have underbed storage and additional storage.

  • Pots and pans, crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. Similar to bedding, lots of international residents will purchase these in advance to be delivered to the property ahead of their arrival. Some of our properties also offer kitchen packs to be purchased, so please enquire directly with your property if this is something they provide.

  • Food and drink, but please ensure you check the UK Customs website to make sure you are only bringing allowed items into the country. Usually, residents will visit a local supermarket on their arrival to stock up with food and drink, and the majority of our properties are within walking distance of a smaller supermarket. There are also a number of international grocery stores throughout our cities.
