Moving Day Advice

Moving to university and leaving home for the first time is a big change in your life, and it’s completely normal to be nervous on moving day.

There are a few things you can do to help make moving day a breeze, so you can focus on getting off to a smooth start and making the most of student life.

Make a list of everything you need

It’s tempting to overpack “just in case” but packing more than you need means you’ll have an overfilled room and will travel home with a bag full of belongings you don’t need! Check out our handy guide on what to bring and not bring which will help you cut down your packing list considerably.

Complete your induction

Everyone, regardless of whether they are a new or returning student, must complete an online induction ahead of checking into their property. This gives you information on the facilities in your property, health and safety, local resources and your account details and balance. Complete your induction ahead of your arrival so you can get your Fast Track Pass and check in without complications.

Download the Student Roost app

Our dedicated app for Student Roost residents puts your living experience in the palm of your hands. You can chat with flatmates and other residents, find out about upcoming property events, make a rent payment, be notified when a parcel has arrived, and even rebook your room for the upcoming academic year.

Get to know your flatmates

It can be tempting to stay in your room once you’re settled in and your parents or friends have gone, but taking the time to say hello to your flatmates will really help you to feel part of our student community. If knocking on a door to introduce yourself isn’t your thing, you can start chatting with residents on the Student Roost app, and can even join chat groups based on your hobbies. And if you’re in a studio, why not head down to the social spaces to meet your new neighbours?

Take a tour of your property

Once you’re settled, it can be a good idea to have a walk around your property so you can get to know your new home. Take note of where the facilities are, which friendly faces are at reception, where you can access support and advice, and an overall scope of the property so you’ll feel at home in no time.

Everyone will be nervous on move in day; you’re starting a new chapter of your life and taking the first steps on an unknown journey. Just remember to breathe and take one day at a time. You’ve got this!
